The research group of Florian Schmidt at the Institute of Innate Immunity of the University of Bonn is currently offering 2 PhD positions in Molecular Immunology

The Schmidt lab takes an entirely novel approach to study the cell biology of the innate immune system: We generate custom-made alpaca nanobodies to interfere with and to visualize inflammasome activation in highly specific ways. Our tools render the fascinating signaling complexes of the innate immune system accessible to systematic analysis in an unprecedented way. We aim to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of inflammasome assembly and the functions of antiviral inflammasome responses against a representative panel of viruses. We address mechanistic questions from multiple perspectives using cell biological, biochemical, immunological, and virological approaches in combination with advanced imaging techniques and protein engineering.

We offer:

·   Challenging projects at the interface of cell biology, immunology, and virology

·   A stimulating, multidisciplinary research environment in the Cluster of Excellence ‘ImmunoSensation’ and the Institute of Innate Immunity at the University of Bonn (and the Doherty Instiute of the University of Melbourne, Australia)

·   Salary will be according to the German salary scale TV-L

·    Graduate students will be integrated either into the Bo&MeRanG graduate program (including one year in the laboratory of Jason Mackenzie, Doherty Institute, Melbourne) or the ‘International Immunology Training Program Bonn’ (IITB)

Our requirements:

·   Enthusiasm for research in a collaborative environment

·   Strong interest in solving fundamental biological problems

·   Commitment to the research project

·   Experience in cell biology, biochemistry, immunology, and/or virology  (Master or equivalent)

·   Excellent degrees and track record

·   Very good communication skills (English)

Application

·      The University of Bonn is an equal opportunity employer.

·     Full applications should include a brief statementon research interests, a CV, list of publications (if applicable), and contact information for two referees, compiled into a single pdf file.
